Kayle I am a firm believer in a harness when in a tree stand but I alsoI use one every time I get in the stand - II use a summit 180 climber and I don't start up the tree till it's attached -I've never had it happen but I could see how you might miss a shot oppurtunity due to the teather getting in the way but I'd rather miss a shot then fall! I would like to start hanging some permanent stands with ladder sticks but I haven't due to the fact I cant see how you'd stay attatched to the tree from the time you start climbing till the time you come down - I guess I could use one teather to climb and have one already above my stand - any thoughts?
use fixed position stands with climbing sticks at times and I will tell you
my way of thinking on them. My harness has "D" rings and has a lineman
belt feature that I use when hanging the stick and stand.
I do not cut any limbs that I don't have to when useing a climbing stick.
That is the beauty of climbing sticks, you can leave cover. I do not use
my harness or lineman belt feature when climbing a stick . If I used
my lineman belt I would have to convert back to harness while standing
on top of the stick plus I would have to disconnect at every limb.
What I do is use three points of contact at all times when climbing the
stick and climb slowly inspecting my ropes for squirrel cuts. By three
point contact I mean two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand.
When I get to my stand while still on the stick I hook up my harness
before I make my transfer from stick to stand.
I think the transfer from stick to stand or stand to stick is the most
dangerous part of useing these type set ups. I never unhook my harness
until I have my three points of contact with my stick.
I never make my set up where I have to make a long step or stand on
top of the climbing stick. If you want to go higher add another section
of stick.
Be safe guys and good hunting.
