    hi.
I have a 1997 evinrude elan 3 cyclinder 35 hp outboard. When it runs i can reamove the ht lead off the top cylinder and the engine stops. if i remove the ht leads of middle or bottom cylinder there is no change to the engine. There is a spark as i can hear the clicking as i put the ht lead near the plug. Any ideas what could be wrong?

    thx

Have you done a compression test? Thats like the nurse getting your temperature on an office visit... first step first, you know. THe compression reading can tell a mechanic quite a bit about your engine.

i would pull the plugs and check for spark then run a compression test if they do have spark.

With regards to the above outboard i think it may be that the previous owner has replaced the ht leads the wrong way around on the middle and bottom cylinders. The top ht lead is horizontally in line from where it fits onto the plug and where it plugs into its coil. Should the mid and bottom ones be horizontally in line?
    thx
