I wanted a rod holder that cost less than 2 dollars, held the rod at a variety angles without allowing the butt of the rod to rotate, and was as simple as possible--no moving parts.

I was originally going to use just a piece of PVC pipe shoved into the bank, but I wanted something that could potentially hold the rod at an angle that is parallel with the water. I used this setup all season and caught a whole bunch fish.

That is a simple idea, good job...Do you use circle hooks? I was just wondering if those would stay in the ground under the pressure of a big fish?

I fished circle hooks with it and it worked well. This sort of holder probably won't work in all situations, but most of the spots I fish are pretty muddy, and that wooden stake pushes way down in there. The butt of the rod has a friction fit into the pipe, but it pops right out when you lift up.
