I prefer total darkness myself, always had better results without a light.

have tried both ways seemed to be better with a light in a boat or even onshore i think the light may attract the bait fish closer to shore and then of course the cats move in closer i've caught many a cat closer to shore after having the light on for an hour or so

I like both ways but under a light seems to work better for me cause of the baitfish. But those bugs are bad in summer especially those may flys being attracted to a light source

I use a Q-beam and everyone in the boat has a led head light with a
switch for white or red. A lantern causes me to loose my night vision.
The only time I would consider a lantern would be if I was going to be
anchored or tied off for a long period of time. If you are not using the
led head light, (everready 10 bucks) you need to check them out, they
are great for cat fishing and deer hunting.

I like the old Coleman lantern myself. Something about listening to the hiss all night that takes me back.

Rap half the globe in foil, poke a small hole for baiting light, set it in front of me a bit, and watch the bugs fly round in front and fry!!:smile2:

Normally if I'm fishing alone its with no lights at all . I do have a headlamp . I will usually freeze until daylight and then I kick up a fire ( bank fishing ).

On the other hand we catch a lot of our herring/threadfinns so we do run crappie lights and still catch fish....last fish over #50 on the boat was caught "30 from the crappie lights.

If I use a light I wont ever set it where I can cast shadows on the water.

I use a light inside the boat. I just got a submersible LED light I'm going to try next season. Anyone ever try them?

When I used to fish from a boat, I would use a light and catch a lot of crappies and white bass as well as some smaller stripers. Never caught a catfish under lights. I use a head lamp when catfishing and prefer to keep it off until I really need it. I now fish from the bank and a lantern or fire work well for me along with the 8" glo-sticks.
