So me and my friend always argue. I KNOW theyre freshwater drum, but EVERYONE I know except for him calls them white perch. And I know a "real" white perch isnt related to a drum. So do you call them "DRUM" or "WHITE PERCH"?

WHOSE WITH ME? "WHITE PERCH"!! lol

I've heard them called either "Drum" or "Perch"...

I call them both. I think both are acceptable. Just like calling a Dogfish a Bowfin. Or calling a Bowfin a Dogfish.

Growing up in Cleveland, we called them Sheepheads...not the most favorable of fish to catch!

Eric, I'm with your friend on this one. I think fish should be referred to by their proper names not local misnomers. After all, you wouldn't call a beagle a coon hound just because grandpa didn't know the difference and he called them that would you?:big_smile::smile2::wink:

Like Larry & Jack said. These are 2 completely different species. White perch are closely related to white bass & striped bass -- in the same family. A freshwater drum are in another family.

that is a white drum. no perch relation. the perch is a sunfish or crappie as we call them. the drum is also called a gaspergou. its realitives are the black drum , red drum, or redfish and the snapper. these are the salt water spiecies. there is also the yellow perch.
