this post was a request from a member on how to clean a perless#9 penn baitcaster. the following posts will guide you through the process. as soon as a mod oks this i will start the reply process detailing the disassembly and re assembly of this reel complete with pic guided steps.

this baitcaster is much more difficult than a newer abu. the entire frame comes down with the reel. i will offer a second option to those who are now comfortable in taking down the gear housing.

ok. lets begin. first on the retrieve handle there is a small screw to hold the nut in the tight position. remove this screw and make sure you do not loose any parts. doing it on a towel or placing them into a small box will help.

there is no need to remove line unless respooling. then remove the nut holding on the handle. pull of handle

then begin removing simple peices. first remove the 4 screws (2 on either side of the reel foot. (make sure that you keep the 4 screws with the foot) the screws can be different lengte and its best to keep them togather.

now go to the side plate where the clicker is located oppisite of the retrieve plate. there is 3 screws on the outer edege left that will remove the side plate. remove the side plate.

now the level wind will also be able to be removed. there is a sliver cover and the worm gear as well . pull out. these parts are visable in the pic.

then the spool will slide out of the other side. the guts will not fall out of this model.

now on the retrieve plate there is the silver spacer bars that seperate the plates. remove the screws on the outer plate to remove these bars. keep the bars and screws togather as to not mix with other screws.

now your reel is mostly dissassembled. should look like following pic.

WARNING! if your a beginner and not comfortable with small parts dont go any further. soak the parts in a mild detergent solevent and blow clean with an air gun. skip down to re assembly. the #9 is a difficult reel for the beginner. i almost never got mine back togather the first time. had to go to corn for assistance to find schems.

for the more advanced fella or if your confident and paitent keep going.

there are 4 screws located just under the star drag spinner. remove spinner by screwing counter clockwise. then remove the 4 screws and pull off gold plate and remove peices. also pull off the silver plate. i do not remove the cast lever. it can be lceaned fine in the reel.

then remove silver plate from clicker side as well.

clean all parts in a mild solevent or warm soapy water and even a small tooth brush will be a great help.

HERE IS THE RE ASSEMBLY PROCESS FOR THE ONES WHOM SKIPPED THE GUTS REMOVEL.

put the silver plate back on the clicker side. add a drop or two of reel oil into the clicker assembly and the tention knob.then place the silver bars back onto the sliver plate and screw into place. don't fully tighten. just get them on. notice in the following pic that the bar with the grove for levelwind goes above the worm gear hole. visable on right. it is also the larger diam bar. do not tighten either. it will need adjusted later. also re attach the foot to the reel and replace the two screws and snug. the spool will now slide into place with the gear into the clicker side.

your reel should now look like this.

now skip this if you did not remove guts.

guts assembly. this is the tricky part. first place the two springs into the holes as shown on the retrieve plate.

add some reel grease to the cast lever spring assembly as well.

place drag washers back on to the gold gear. they should have been replaced clean and dry in the same order as they were removed. then place the gear inot position as shown. add small dab of grease to the teeth.

take the gold peice shown and slip the tiny gear into center as shown in the pic below. this peice will fit in over the springs. they must be gently pressed down. this step may take a few trys. this is the steps that are tricky.there is a slot on the tiny gear that should be facing out towards you. a small amount of grease should be added to this gear too.

this pic shows this step again a bit clearer.

now take the flat gold plate with hook and slip it over last piece. notice in the following pic that the hook goes over the gold cast mech's raised stud. also the little fingers that stick out on other end goes down. see pic.

now take final plate and place over these applying light pressure. the springs will want to shoot it back out.

now the clutch dog needs to be put in. lift the last plate up just a 1/8" or so and there is a small hole where one of the four center screws goes. the dog goes over this hole toward the teeth noticable in the last pic above. you can see them above on the top of gear at bottom of the reel plate. the dog must face these. once in put the screw through from the other sade through it to hold it into position. this takes paitence. lots of it. i sometimes have to pull everything back out and begin again. practice. the next pic below shows the dog in position and the threads of screw that holds it into place. (notice how im holding screw in place with thumb)

then replace the piece that keeps the dog against the teeth. once all in place turn the screw that holds the dog into place to hold on the plate. then replace the other 3 screws as well to hold togather.

now before ya go any farther turn the gear from the outside where the handle (retrieve) goes. make sure it does not turn backwards or the dog isn't engadging. if not ya gat to do it over till it does. once all back togather it should look like this.

now slide the silver bushing back over the gear shaft.

and then place silver plate back on to the plate.

BEGIN HERE AGAIN IF YA SKIPPED THE GUTS REMOVAL. (ALL PARTS SHOULD BE CLEAN AND DRY. ADD GREASE TO THE GEARS UNDER THE GOLD PLATE WHERE GARS ARE VISABLE THE BEST YOU CAN REACH.)

replace the star for drag system and retrieve handle. put a dab of oil on the threads to keep them working at 100%. keeps the star easy to adjust while fighting a fish. then screw on nut untill tight and replace tiny holding screw to keep nut on.

now get other side of reel with spool. put the level wind back into place. worm gear can be lubed later. place the guard over the worm gear into the tiny holes. the longer side towards back as shown in pic. this is a tricky part too. after ya got it lined up place the other side on as well. line up all the levelwind peices. once ya get things togather screw a couple of the screws into the sliver spacer bars just to hold it togather. dont tighten yet. aslo loosten the spool tenstion knob now to aid in final assembly.
