I'm going to shoot some pidgeons for bait. How do you guys recommend preping the birds for bait? Feathers on or off? Halved, quarterd or whole? Etc?
I can't speak for the whole board here at the USCA, but pidgeons are not used as bait around here. Im not saying they don't work, but pidgeons are mostly found in the cities here, and hunting them is a no no in the city. I will be following this thread for your results though.

I would poke them through with a knife a couple times and use them whole, the poking will help release the "juices". I know of a couple spots where the things roost and nest up under a river bridge, I have seen catfish take the babies that fall out of the nests and into the water. In this case any predatory fish in the water will take a bird that hits the water. I have also seen a catfish take a dead smelly rotten bird out of a debris pile in a backwater eddy before on the river, there were all kinds of trash and stuff floating and a dead bird too, actually watched a channel cat come up from underneath and grab it then haul butt for deeper water. If it is edible and in the water chances are a catfish will eat it.

I agree with the above, If chicken breast catches cats, I can't see why a pidgeon won't work. If it turns out that they are good catfish bait, there won't be any more pidgeon problems!!!! I can just see all the catfishermen chasing pidgeons around the roof tops! Free catfish bait and gettin rid of the pidgeons, Killin' 2 birds with 1 stone. (no pun intended)
