what do y'all do with your shad cut in half use head part then use tale end or what?
If its dead, I use the head first and then the gut pocket.
If alive, I use it like that.
Same here, I usually prefer it to be alive..and cut the last inch or so by the tail off, leaks more oil and blood I think
I forgot to mention cutting off the tail or making a couple small slits in the sides to get the scent dispersed on the live ones.
thanks for the tip sounds good
Whatever they are biting on.
It all works, as long as it is chad they will eat it.
last year I was catching these 2 to 3 inch shad..hooked them whole and after not getting any bites or when I'm moving I step on the shad mushing it up a little and try throwing it out again. Worked a few times last year.
I prefer live butt,if dead then I needal it with the tail cut off and a leader.
fresh caught goes on the hook whole. if that don't produce i will start cutting it up. the big shad get cut up right away.
I have never used shad but this year will be trying store bought packaged shad. I will use them as a whole when hooking and setting lines.
fresh caught :0a20:
i use head and cut the meet in pieces
If I can't catch skipjacks.... I like big shad, still flopping. Cut straight down behind the head about as far down as the eye, then make a diagonal cut down to the end of the anal fin. This gives you the head with gut pocket attached. I learned about this "maja cut" from a saltwater magazine about trophy striper fishing. Big blues seem to like it too.
