I've used it frozen and fresh and I've honestly gotten slammed on both.
I threw a frozen chub head out last night, didn't even water it down, just tossed it in the freezer in the zip-lock - it wasn't in the water for five minutes before it got nailed.

When my bait gets frozen it gets a good 3 - 4 days freeze too before I use it again. If I know I'm going fishing the next day, I just put it on ice in the bait bucket and use it the next day.

ive always used fresh caught, but frozen works too. You cant go wrong with what you have at hand.

I would tend to believe thru experience that fresh caught shad are the best only my opinion of course. Good luck fishing!
