The other day a me and buddy were baiting our trotlines on a little creek. As we were baiting them the line jerks and goes down to the bottom. We check the line and 3 hooks over a channel hit one of the unbaited hooks while we were standing right beside it.And earlier that day we found that a channel had hit one of our other trotlines with an unbaited hook..

Are they starving or just think the hooks food?

Catfish really on smell more than sight, so they must of smell something near that hook and chomped down on it.

the hooks may have still had the scent of previous bait on it. Just one question, did this involve an old crank phone by chance?

stainless silver hooks? If so they probably saw the shine of the hook as you were slightly jiggling the line up and down... There was a post about that a while ago and someone said that a guy would just use the stainless steel hooks and have them shined up really nicely and he'd just run his trot a few times a day and catch a boat load...

Its amazing sometimes... when bluegill fishing you've gotta stay away from having a shiny splitshot or snap swivel on your line because you'll get bites but it'll only be them playing with the shinys rather then the bait...

More than likely yes. Ive caught blues and a few channels on spoons / rooster tails when sandbass/crappie fishing.

And they say when diving in area with barracuda to remove shiney objects that could provoke an attack since barracuda are extremely sight oriented.

The hooks were new but they weren't a shiny silver they were kinda darker.I figure its cause we were moving the line while baiting and the cat saw it moving and hit it..It was crazy because we were 3 or 4 feet from it.Freaked us out cause the line jerked down all of a sudden..
