What is your favorite live bait and lure for bringing in the slabs? I have been experimenting with a white rooster tail lately and always use 3 inch plus gold or silver shiners.

Usually just jigs with crappie nibbles. Sometimes a minnow if that is what the fish want.

I catch close to 300-500 slabs a winter using one simple setup, a slip-float with an finese ice jig called a "ratsu" they are a soft plastic and come in a variety of colors, though i prefer red over any other. i tip them with a waxworm. this is the same way i catch monster spring bluegills, and catch my somertime bait for catfishing. it is the hottest bait i have used in the last 3 years. i would like to give the link, but they aren't a BOC sponsor. if you are interested shoot me a pm. and i will gladly give you the information...goodluck...rollo

i like to use shiners but i really like to use jigs of all kinds.i also like to use floats just because i seem to be able to fish stumps and brush better.

Small curly tail jigs and tube. I want to experiment with the road runner jigs this summer. I will see how well they do at the local lake. I havent used live bait to much but i have caught crappies on red worms while catfishing.

i use 3-4 inch fathead minnows and 2-3 inch tiger minnows, tipped on a 1/32 ounce white jighead. i don't know what the tiger minnows are really called. they are silver with white vertical stripes on them, with red fins. we catch them in the creeks here with an umbrella net.

Those sound kinda like topeka shiners. Males are red and blue and silver. They are only around in spring when water is way up.

Are crappie nibbles or whatever they are called, worth it? Or am I just better using minnows?

Today we used minnows or a small silver jig with a white head.
Sometimes, depending on the water clarity I use a white grub with black head or Yellow jig with white head. Texas waters differ in clarity so you have to just try anything you got.
