Hi. If this is old news, I apologize, but the Corps of Engineers has some great river data on the web. If you haven't seen it before, I'd encourage you to check it out.

The main page is http://www2.mvr.usace.army.mil/WaterControl/new/layout.cfm

From there you can go to all of the Corp river districts and drill down on specific sections of river. It includes river data all across the country. Personally, I'm interested in the data for lock and dam 12 on the Mississippi. Here's the data page for that location http://www2.mvr.usace.army.mil/WaterControl/stationinfo2.cfm?sid=MI12&fid=BLVI4&dt=S

There's also a cool site that has navigation charts and aerial photography (great for finding backwater routes) of the Illinois and Mississippi rivers available for free.. http://www2.mvr.usace.army.mil/NIC2/default.cfm?nav=true

yea they do have some good stuff on thier website. Somewhere there is a story about the names of some of the old river towns and history of the river travel which is really interesting. It was old to me but a bet some have never seen it and better to be safe than sorry in getting information out. Thanks
