When we married, we started saving buffalo nickels. (they were common then) Over the years we'd collected several hundred, lots of old silver dollars, numerous other old coins passed down from our parents. Then several years ago when we lived in TX, some local kids broke into our home while we were on vacation in another state. They took all and cashed them in for face valve at a 7 to 11 store.
