I was fishing at a pond on a camping trip when we got into some BIG hybrids. I mean BIG. The biggest I'd ever seen. They were at a pound and just over. Then one kid I was fishing with caught a 1lb 4oz monster! I was in awe over it, and then later caught myself a 1lb 6oz fish. All in all we caught 10, and there wasn't a little one in the mix. I checked a few mins ago and saw the state record was 1lb 14 oz. I'm sure there's quite a few state records in there, I'm just hoping I get a chance to fish it again. I thought I'd share. These are absolute monsters!!

Those are some fine looking green sunfish. Why do you say that they are hybrids? They all have the markings of green sunfish except for the bass.:confused2:

What a great catch..... I haven't caught any over 1lb! At that size you can get a nice fillets off of them, and they taste great!

Yes, I kept one bass. We were catching so many that were so small, I really should have kept a bunch, but at least I got a different species to compare it to. I googled an image for hybrid perch, and it looked just like mine, but when I checked the green sunfish, I saw a lot of similarities too. So... how can you tell the difference?

Also, we were camping out and yes... they were fantastic!! I mean you shouldn't eat that well when you're camping but Man! Yes, they made some serious fillets.

David thanks for sharing. Those are some dandys. Many people will fish a life time and never catch a sunfish that big. Congrats.

I bet those babies ate well. For anyone who hasn't tried them, those sunfish are fantastic in the skillet.

To the few who've told me they are GREEN SUNFISH, I've had a few other panfish friends agree they were hybrids. They told me the bodies of green sunfish are more elongated, and their mouths larger. Here's a pic of the rest of them. Sure seems to me like a bg/ gs hybrid, but I'd love any help you can give

I would bet the perch got so big because they have a abundent food supply. Perch eat the baby bass. The bass are so small as they are over populated.

    Foggy :cool2:
