since this is a very popular model on the B.O.C. i thought ide document the dis and reassembly of this model for the folks whom are not confident enough to open up the baitcasters.

this is for the abu 6500 cl3 models.

    1. remove the screw on the plastic cover on the retrieve handle. pop the cover off. take an abu tool or small screwdriver and remove the tiny retaining clip on the end inside the nut. remove the gold nut and slip handle off. there will be a small spacer on next. remove it. leave the star drag on so your drag washers stay in. that will come later.

your reel should look like this.

2.next loosten the three knerelled knobs on the plate shown in pic #2. they will not fall out so loosten all the way and remove gear cover. the spool will also slip out the same side.

3.set aside peices and remove the three screws on opposite side and these are screws and will come out. be careful not to loose. then remove the plate carefully and watch the two rubber peices on the clicker posts.

4.slide off the rubber peices and slide off the clicker mec.

    5. removel of the level wind. slide thin retaining clip forward and loosen and remove the cap on the bottom of the slide where the line goes through. the pawl cap. remove pawl from the bottom and the worm gear will slide from the insert tube.

    6. now you should be ready to clean these pieces. rinse in clean warm water with mild dish soap to remove sand grit and if there is grease buildup remove with mild solovent and toothbrush. clean and dry.

take spool and pop off the white plastic gear on the end. then your bearings should fall out with a shake. turn over and remove axle. there is a small spring steel clip that can be removed with fine needle nose pliers. be gentle. the other spool bearing should come out too. BE CAREFUL NOT TO LOOSE THE PLASTIC BRAKE PEICES OFF THE SPOOL.

add a drop of reel oil to each bearing. then began to re assemble spool. be sure to wash and dry the inside of spool if it is dirty.

the spool level wind are now ready for re assembly. take the tube for the worm gear ind slide it into the side it came out of. 1/2 way in place the string leveler in to as well and go on into the slot. make sure the top of the slide goes into the slot on the rod on frame. take time to look at the slot in the rod it slides in. it can collect dirt. if you scrubbed the frame with the brush ya should have got it but be sure. slide worm gear into tube and place pawl back into bottom of slide and be sur it gies in all the way. replace cap. if pawl isn't installed correctly damage could result whem screwing on cap. snug cap with abu tool or flat driver. just snug it. replace the clip on the end to hold it in place.

take some reel grease and apply a small amount to worm gear through bottom of tube where its exposed. this should be done through out season too.

now place the cleaned and dry clicker assembly back on and slip the rubber fittings on as well.

hold horizontally and place the cap back into place. put the three screws back into place. now your done with that side. you can now place spool into it position with white gear into the cap with plastic clicker gears.

now for the gear side. remove the star drag by unscrewing it all the way off. there are two silver washers on the shaft after this is removed. these and carefully watch the direction they go in. remove the two screws from the plate under the drag. pull apart the cover fron the inside plate.

remove the inside peices and the big gold gear. the drag washeres are on the inside of this gear. do not let them fall out. remove 1 at a time and be SURE to sit them into position as they came out. do not mix em up.

clean and wash all the peices that were removed. then comes re assembly. the drag should not be oiled. the washers should be cleaned and dried and placed back into gear as the came out. CLEAN AND DRY for a proper working drag. then place the gear back through and then place the silver washers on the reverse side as they were removed. a small amount of oil can be placed on the threads if desired for easy drag adjustments. put a small amount of reel grease on the big gold gear.

begin replaceing peices back into the gear cap. place the black plastic center peice on the gold gear. the teeth should be in on the gear and the slot out. also with the axle in the little center gear this is easier to assemble. the long side with the gold ring on it should go into the little gear. add a tiny dab of grease to the tiny gear.

place the other black peice into the reel. the two metal spring steel fingers go under the black center peice. the center one will need to be lifted a bit. the silver metal peice goes over these .

the release button goes on the gold stud shown in pic 23 on the thin inside plate.

now turn over and hold the release in place and place the two togather. take a light or head lamp if needed. and look in between the two. the studs all have thier place to slip into the circles in the plastic pecies. the stud (shown in pic #23) on the release levers goes into the whole on the silver metal peice shown in pic #22. they all must go into the correct spots to work correctly. it may take a few tries. be paitent.

then add the two screws in the reverse side of plate and snug. check the release button. make sure it clisks and when you turn the star it should click and ingage. don't go any durther until it does.

now for finishing touches. slide the axle into the spool. if ya want add a drop of oil to the axle. wiggle the two togather until they fit snug. once ya get it finger tighten the knerelled knobs back onto the threaded studs inside the reel cap. CHECK ITS OPERATION NOW. make sure the clicker works and the drag as well as release and ingage. then snug just a 1/4 turn or so with the abu tool. or finger tight is suffeciant. just like mine snug.

place the sliver washer on the threaded handle rod with the flat side up. slip the hanlde on next. and finger the gild nut on. tighten and snug with abu tool or small wrence.

place the tiny retainer ring back on the stud.

now replace the plastic peice on the nut. some adjusting may be nessessery to get the screw hole to line up. replace screw.

walla. then your abu 6500 now should be as good working order as the day ya got it. wipe it off with a clean soft cloth and relpace on your staff of choice.
