Caught 4 channel cat today in the resoivor. After I fillet them I decided to cut open the stomach to see what they had been eating. Thinking I'd find pieces of fish and such, I was surprised to find stomach full of bugs ! :eek:oooh: Mainly June bugs (Japanese beatle), and flys and tiny bugs of all kinds packed in there. Not one scrap of fish in any of them. they were 18"-22". Just found this to be odd.

Sounds like a good hatch of bugs!! It is amazing what they will feed on when there is an abundance of a cetain food. Some bugs they love, some they will not touch.

Yeah, when there is an abundance of something, they will eat it. Catfish are pretty smart fish. A couple summers ago when we had our 17 year cicada hatch, everything was feeding on them because so many were falling out of trees and into the water. We caught a few channel cats using them on topwater.

They are opportunist. They need a balanced diet too. bugs don't swim as fas as bait fish. I have caught them with belies full of corn when the muscrats are pulling the stalks into the creek.

I have caught some out of a reservoir around here and they always were jammed full with crawdads. Never have seen bugs in them yet.
