I just got back from South Dakota and caught two catfish. One was easily identified as a channel cat, but the other I was guessing is a channel, but it was black in color. I believe I have heard they can turn black in color.

However the tail was not as forked as I normally see on channel cats.

The upper jaw protruded over the lower jaw and there were two pink circular spots on the just under the lip of the upper jaw. Looked like sensors or something.

    Here is a photo:

That is a channel. They typically only look like that up here during or after the spawn but they are fairly common up here.

My initial thought when hearing about a black channel cat is a spawning male. Their heads also swell up and develop bulges and they are super aggressive.

However, when looking at the actual picture, it doesn't look like a spawner to me, but more of a fish that has adapted to its surroundings. I've seen blues that are nearly white, some gray, and some that look just like the one you're holding up, and I think that's a product of their environment.

That would be a channel..The anal fin looks nothing like a blues and it would barely have an anal fin if it was a flatty..And if it was a hybrid it would look just like a blue..That there is a channel hands down..Catfish are like people, they come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colors..

Its a channel cat that has adapted to its surroundings, as stated above. Not uncommon.

I saw a long, skinny 10lb blue caught this summer that color. If it wasnt so skinny it wouldve went 20-25 easy

One other thing I noticed was it had two circular spots that seem like senors of some type under the upper lip.

Fins rays where in the 24 to 29 range.

Very interesting, It looks like a mutant with those appendages underneath mouth. Did you keep the fish?

I did not keep the rest however, but have not eaten yet as it's in the freezer.

You think I'll develop into mutant if I eat it :eek:oooh:

Mine were caught in the Elk river in Maryland when I was a kid I released all of the fish I caught unless someone was around who wanted them
