Im guessing by the gold color and the spots along the bottom this was a channel cat... never seen the gold so broken up on one though, just wanted a second opinion, almost has the color of a flathead though...

and if it is a channel then it would be just 6.5 lbs shy of the current state record

That's definitely a channel, and a nice one at that. Channel cats have an overbite and flatheads have an underbite. It's harder to tell the difference between channels and blues. The anal fin on a channel cat has a slight curve to the outside edge...blues will have a straight edge.
How much did your catch weigh?

Channel for sure. Up here they get that color if they are in clearer water.

Channel, and danged nice one!! What did he go, around 20#? Also, flats have an almost straight tail fin - not the deep V that blues and channels have. Great fish!

Channel cat at both ends. Flatties have underbite and no fork in tail.

Now that may be a flattie that's had his tail chawed and run face first into a shovel lol!
