I know their are a lot of fishermen on here on a budget (that doesn't mean you have to use junk), thought this could be a useful thread.

    2 good baitcast combos:

    Combo 1:
    Reel: Abu Garcia 6600BCX $64.99

Rod: Bass Pro Shops Power Plus Trophy Class $24.99

    Total:$89.98

    Combo 2:
    Reel: Shakespeare TW30L $39.99

    Rod: Berkley Glowstik $44.99

    Total: $84.99

Feel free to throw in your opinions or ideas, the whole idea is to keep it "cheap" but still have some decent gear.

I would almost take the Shakespeare over the 6600 bcx. I've never bought one the the bcx's, but from playing with them in wal-mart, I didn't get the idea that they would be that good.

I do have a tidewater and it does pretty good. I don't like it near as much as my 6500 c3's, but it does do the job.

I was in Cabelas the other day and noticed that Rhino (Zebco) is making a reel very similar to the tidewater. I think the combo was around 60.00. I almost bought one just to try it out, but the rod was way to long for what I wanted. I didn't see just the reel itself.

    Penn 9m - $54
    Shakespear Sturdy Stick- $22
    500yrd of 30lb big game- $6
that is a combo under the price range that will handle most any cat out there. Plus it gives ya room to get some good hooks, sinkers, and swivels.

Ya dont need all that line so you have leader material too.
The Rod is the weak link. I have only found them in lenghts up to 6'6" so your casting distance goes down, the line is kinda thick so loose some casting distance there too. The Penn is a tough reel but no bells or whistles, just clicker. I would not recommend this for entry level guy cuz when ya try to cast the heck out of these Penn's they like to backlash. Even more so than the other baitcasters. Ya gotta have a "smart" thumb with this rig.

Yeah, the tidewaters are the reels I have been fishing as of late, I have one paired with a 9' Glowstik, and another paired with an 8' Berkley Big Game. I really think that the Tidewaters are some of the best reels out there for the price, I have pulled trees outta the water with them:roll_eyes:

    Shimano calcutta reel 400 bucks
ST CROIX surf rod 300 bucks.

for 700 bucks you got one heck of a cheap combo.
