My wife and I went to Lay Lake, Al this weekend. We tossed a cast net from 1830 til about 1730 and then fished until about 0200. Caught several blues and a few channels. The largest blues were 19 and 27 pounders. The rest ranged from 3 to 15 pounds. We had out six rods from a boat anchored in 50' average water around dead tree stick ups. 3 rods were set up with slip floats (set at 40', 30, 10') and 3 were set up for bottom fishing. Used 7/0 Circle hooks and 30# Big Cat line on all rods. Also, had a mix of fresh cut shad and bream. Bream caught the two largest, but shad caught the most. Slip floats caught most of the fish also with the depths pretty sporadic. Bonus: I caught a large Paddlefish. I hooked it in the gill slit while trying to set the hook on something that kept messing with my cut shad. Not sure if it was the paddlefish or not. Unfortunately, the fish was too badly injured and I don't think it survived. Man those are beuatiful fish. That is the second one I've caught this year and the only two I've ever caught. I wanted to CPR it and try to save it so I didn't weight, but it felt about 40 lbs or so.
