I may have this catfish thing figured out, just wish it were closer to home! We catch a lot of them but keep only the midsize fish. I have been throwing back the ones over 8 pounds and under 3 pounds. Those from 3 t0 8 pounds are the best eating fish. Over 8 pounds they are a little tougher. Plus I think it's important to have plenty of breeding size fish. Here are a couple we kept from this weekend. As you can see my little guy is having the time of his life doing this!

    JJHack,
I get pretty pumped seeing how excited your little fishing buddy is.
Next year mine will be close to three, and he will be my little fishing buddy.
Just have to work on Mom a little more. She thinks he will be to young.
Young??? as long as they can stand, wear a lifejacket and have fun with Dad.
    ITs gonna be a blast.

Larry show her these photos, he is far from too young! I still hold the rod while he turns the handle many times, but he catches a lot of blue gills for the bait all by himself.

He will be just fine at 3 years old. Just remember to bring lots of snacks for the "slow" periods. My little boy sleeps on a sleeping bag in the front of the boat about 9-10 PM and I wake him up to reel them in when he wants to get up. Otherwise I just catch them after 10PM and let him get the early ones before 10PM

jjhack, good for you, Those little guys need to learn how to fish. I read somewhere that if a child is never take fishing before 12 years of age they will never acquire an interest for hunting or fishing. :D

I remember taking out my three year old, lots of fun. Now he begs me to go. I love seeing kids out there fishing, that means that the future of our sport wil be maintained.

Nice! My five year old loves to fish. He asks me every day how many more days till Saturday so we can go. Since the fishing has been slow, he's been my deckhand loading shad from the casnet into the cooler. Seeing those pictures of your boy just reminds why they get so excited. I keep forgetting a 3 pound fish to them looks like a 40 pounder to me or you. Enjoy it! Oh, yeah, here's a picture of my fishin' partner by the MO river.

I have 2 daughters, 4 and 5 years old. I took them fishing for flatties for the first time this year. They both love it! As a matter of fact, I have a hard time getting out at all now without them going along. We find a nice sandbar, bring the poles, a couple of fold out lawnchairs, some hotdogs for the fire, a few sand toys for if they get bored, and a blanket to cover with. Great time to bond with them!

My son is 2 and he will chase me down the road or cry out the door if he see's me hooking up the boat he allways wants to go fishin. He is going to be a heck of a fisherman if I can get him to stop throwing my bluegill back in the water.
