I enjoyed the music great fishing song and somewhat true. Also I had heard that you need to burp a big fish before releasing them, but I had never seen it done. This was very helpful to me as now I will know how to do it! Thanks a bunch!! Reps to ya!

so are they just stickin the stick in and opening the fishes throat, or do they actually poke something open? and is this just necessary for deep water catches?

I don't know alot about it myself. I have never done it. but some post in the libary say you "puncture" the swim bladder. and yes it for fish caught in deep water. how deep is deep? maybe someone else will give more detail.

Sometimes when these cats are on the bottom (usually 25-30 ft or so) and come up too fast, their air bladders will expand because of the quick ascent. It's kind of like a diver not being able to equalize when coming up. Most people don't realize that by releasing these fish, they'll probably die. I was taught to use a piece of 1/2" PVC pipe to gently insert - this releases the air trapped in the bladder. Then they can be released.

We do this all the time on Milford Lake. Even some of the smaller fish that are brought up quick need "burping" if you plan on releasing them. Their belly's will be very hard and distended, as though they've been feeding heavily. I also use a 1/2 piece of pvc, about 2.5 ft long, I beveled the ends for easier insertion. Nothing is punctured, you just gently insert the tube down the thoat until you hear escaping air, don't look down the tube while doing this, occasionally "stuff" will come shooting out. We do all of our big Catfish releases the same way.

thanks for putting that video up. if you're letting those big ones go, it's important to give them a chance. any fish thrown over the side will swim down right away from instinct, but with the air bladder not working right, they won't last long.
