I caught a 12 lb. channel cat out of a lake last night. My buddy wanted to eat it, so i cleand it and cut open the stomach. We thought there would be fish inside, but to our surprise it was filled with seaweed or something similar. Thought this was strange, anyone else experience this?

If the carp or gar are spawning the cats will get weeds and algae when they eat the eggs. And maybe he was just getting his daily veggies.

If it's hungry, a channel will eat anything. I had an uncle who would bait with mulberries and grapes, I've caught them on cotton seed.

Here in S. Dakota during this past June & July nearly all the channel cats I took were full of this mossy crap. IMO it is what they eat at times. Some had extended bellys that made 'em look like they were full of eggs.

Catfish are omnivores meaning they eat plant and meat..They need a certain amount of green in there diet to survive.Usually they get there veggie fix by eating insects and other fish that eat grass but occasionally they will eat plant material.

Interesting you said that, the place where i caught this fish is only about 60 acres and I know of some 50lb. + flatheads caught in there. I was kind of wondering the same thing.
