Just had a question for everyone. Do many people use small catfish they catch as bait? I wont even use small bass as bait because i want them to grow up big oneday, so i can catch them when they're six pounds or better. I talked to a guy the other day who said he thought on of the best catfish baits was small catfish..... Is this true, or is this kinda immoral since most of us are out there hunting that big one that got the chance to grow up.....

Just wanted an opinion on what everyone thought, or to find out if small cats are a good bait for big cats....

I have never used one of the three "preferred" species for bait but have heard that small channels can be good flathead bait. I have also heard stories of big channels being caught on small ones. I would suggest useing bullheads if they are available to you and are legal in your state. They are more plentiful and wont make you feel quilty.:smile2:

It's illegal in many states to use game fish or their parts as bait. Check your local regs before you put anything questionable on your hook.

Most importantly is iot legal in your state. I know a group of trot liners who only go out once a year to fill their freezers. They tell me that when they find a Bullhead on one of their lines they just rehook him and they say it works well. I usually just keep those flank pieces that lots of people just throw away, and use those for bait the next time I go out. Never had the occasion to try flank meat on larger flatheads. I usually catch channel from 3-8 Lbs and thei flanks are OK. But I got an 8 Lb Blue once and an Alligator couldn't have eaten those flanks.

Bullhead catfish are one of the best baits for Flathead in my area. Always check your game laws and if you are not sure, email or call your state department of natural resources.

Do bullhead work as cut bait? I know a culvert I can catch of them but state laws says I can't move live bait between bodies of water.

I never tried them as cut bait but I would give it a shot, if you can't use them alive.

In my area there used to be a small pond on almost every forty acres as most farmers also ran cattle, these ponds got Bullhead in them and in most cases overpopulated making catching them in great numbers quite easy. They do make good bait for Blues and Flats where I fish but I never liked using them as no matter how cautious I tried to be I was going to get a barb, most times several and a Bullhead "thorn" effects me about like a honey bee stinger.
Few farmers run cattle in my area any longer and most of the small stock ponds have been drained and row crops planted over where they used to be.
Long way around saying yes they work.
