Usually use a throw net smaler is easier at first like 3.5 ft or 4 ft or a dip basket. fresh skipjack caught on white or chartreuse jigs work well. depends on what kind of bait is available where you are as to what method to use.

First of all Sam you need to find out what is the bait fish that is indegenous to the lake or waterway that you are fishing. Then rig up to go after that type bait.

To do this just ask around and find out if the waterway your fishing has skips or shad in it. Or if the area around you has any skips or shads.

Once you've found out what the bait fish is then your halfway there.

If the catfish are eating mostly bream you can catch them easily on rod and reel using worms or crickets.

If its shad they like you need to locate the shad. Usually you will find them in rivers close to dams and swift water. For shad you can use a cast net to catch them.

If it's skips they feed on most you catch them on rod and reel with a jig using a white or chartruese grub or you can use a sabiki rig.

    Hope this helps

I also like to catch skipjack with a yozuri-s topwater minnow or with live minnows under a cork...
