I recently saw a fish basket that hooked over the side of a boat, I knew where some items were that I thought I could construct as good or a better one from so here it is.
I took an old hoop net an cut it down, used 2 rings and tied the bottom under the second ring. I hook it over the side of the boat using the oar lock, I originally had a pin welded to the top ring but it bent the ring with a lot of weight so I attached a small chain to one side and then to a pin.
The opening is 26 inches and it is 5 feet long. Even the big one go in here and stay. The great thing is you take your fish off and toss them in the hoop - no hassle. The attachment show it with the boat on the trailer, but you get the idea.

Pretty cool idea! The store bought ones need modifications anyway if you don't want to loose your fish! Also, the store bought ones arn't that big! Good job!

The rest of it went into another basket, I made 2 from the hoop net, it had been hanging on a wooden peg in a dry shed, but the back half was somewhat dried out the part I used still had the tar on the netting.

Looks real good to me. So do you just take it out of the water and place it in the boat when you move to another place or just leave it in the water and move the boat? Just was wondering. J.D.Straka

That depends, I can move slow with it out if there are not too many fish in the basket, sometimes on the river I just raise my anchors and float down aways and leave it in but if I move very far with the motor running I just pull the bottom end in the boat. I made a cord at the bottom to pull the net in and leave the hoop attacched.
I'll take a picture of the bottom of the net and add it.

Here is some pics of the top and bottom, The rope on the bottom allows me to pull in the net and leave the hoop attached when I move.
