I want to catch shad and at times minnows. Will a 1/2" mesh work for both? do I need 3/8, 1/4?

Use 3/8" you can not use 1/4" in Okla. 3/8" will catch all the bait you can use,

Thanks, Dirtdobber I won a bid on ebay for a 3/8 cast net but they sent 1/2". I guess I'll send it back.
It's great to have your questions answered by experienced people rather than salesmen. I have spent more time on ths site than I should since I ran across it, but when you have a fever you have to do what you have to to get it down. I have fish fever bad!!!!

I used 3/8 nets for years. The only issue I had was when the threadfins/yellowtails are smaller I ended up with them gilled in the net and it was like picking grapes. I swapped to a 1/4 mesh to avoid this, and feel like my baits are in better shape when I catch them. If your looking for bigger shad for cut bait then a 3/8 to 1/2 mesh will probably suit you better.

You are right about the 1/4" working better But it is Illegal to use that size in Okla.

Larger mesh size also means faster sink rate.
