This is the one you have been waiting for folks!

The next Carolina Catfish Club meeting, Monday July 12th, will feature Capt. Darryl Smith as the guest speaker.

Capt. Darryl is a legendary guide on the Santee Cooper lakes, and has probably caught more fish from those waters than any other guide. He has a wealth of knowledge, and has some great stories.

The meeting is open to the public and free to attend.

The thing about Capt Darryl is that he hasn't been catfishn that long. Its the way he went into it..... wide open. About 10 yrs ago(give or take a yr or 2) Darryl went to Charles Davis and asked how he caught big catfish at 601. Charles filled him in so Darryl gets a egg timer for the simple fact that Charles told him to move ever 10-15 min. That same yr Capt Darryl put a 100+ lb blue in the boat and claims he had a flathead bigger than that right at the boat but got off. He went on to get his Capt Lic., become a sucessful guide on the Santee, been on numerious TV fishn shows. I'll stop there and let him tell it cause he's got some great stories. As a friend i once fished with him out of Jacks Creek in shallow water, you won't find anyone that fishes as hard as Captain Darryl. He also showed me how to make the drift sinkers (slinky weights) that i now use. He showed me the secrets of getting sponsers and even how he gets on the tv shows, How??? you bug them till they do

I might be wrong about this but it seems I remember him sitting night after night at the convergence of the two rivers. We don't fish that hard but if I'm remembering right he was there almost everytime I hit the water back then. As much as I saw that boat he must've just about lived on it. I started hearing that someone he had caught that big fish. Next thing you know, I wake up on Saturday morning and he's got Oneal Outdoors sitting in one of the same holes I've fished my entire life. This could definately be classified as the fish making the fisherman. You could fish your whole life and not run across some of those fish he's caught. Put that with the luck of doing it at such opportune times and you've got a God given chance to fish for a living that you couldn't plan if you tried... I wish I could be so good and lucky:).

I don't believe in luck.

It has been said that luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. You have to be prepared to catch 100 pound fish; you don't just luck into it. I think people like Darryl catch the fish they do because their level of commitment to doing so is higher than other folks.

Many times I have heard people say, "well, I could catch big fish like so-and-so if I fished as much as they do." Maybe, but you don't fish as much as they do, you don't commit as much time to it, so your results will always be less.

"...the more i practice the luckier i get..."

This quote has been attributed to many golfers, and I think it is a snide way of say "I don't count on luck to perform well".

I look forward to hearing the stories and lesson of Capt. Darryl July 12th. The amount of time he commits to catching catfish is a lesson in itself as to what it takes to be successful.

Another thing about Capt. Darryl that i like is something he did. I had taken a party out on the lower lake at Santee. When comming in from a hard night of fishn with few fish to show for my efforts, i run into Capt Darryl with a party and they had fished the upper lake. When he asked how i'd done, i said "we done ok but the bite was slow". He just agreed with me and said lets talk later. After my clients were gone he told me where they had found the fish (they had caught a cooler full) Anyone else would have probaly rubed it in but not Darryl. I repaid the favor later on. He had a tv crew at 601 and they had done the talk part of theshow but was having trouble catching the fish. He had heard from a friend that i had been catching a lot of fish so Darryl called me and asked where and how. I told him that they wouldn't touch nothing but live shad. He went on to complete the show with a success. When guiding you need friends for the simple fact that you can't be in all places at the same time. That along with his hard work is what has made him a success. I haven't spoke to Darryl in yrs now. I guess when i quit going to Santee our paths just didn't cross as much. For you who go to this meeting, get him to tell you about the time he was fishing the Conagree with a party and run across a dead body.

I believe in hard work and preparation as much as the next guy. I'm not trying to downplay anyones accomplishments when I mention luck. To believe that there is no such thing as luck, chance, fate, murphy's law, acts of God are whatever you want to call it is a little strong. There are simply always circumstances in your life that are beyond your control no matter what you do to limit them.

Try to get rich playing the lottery. You can buy a single ticket and your chances are slim. You can do some research to see what digit is drawn more than any other and buy a ticket with that number every thirty minutes. You'll stand a better chance but the odds will still be better that one of the millions who walked in a bought one ticket would win instead of you. The only way you could make sure you won would be to buy every ticket. You'd win but you wouldn't get rich doing it. Fishing is the same. No matter how you work at it, what you buy, what you know, or how many hours you spend on the water, you're still lucky you've got the opportunity. Now catching a 100lb blue on TV takes some real luck.

To say that a guy who fishes twenty years to catch three 100lb catfish but manages to catch one of them on the one day he's got a television crew on his boat doesn't owe a little something to luck is just not right. If that were the case, he could just write the book and we could all do it. Now he could raise the fish in a tank, have someone hog tie it to his line and just reel it up at the right moment but that's not what we're talking about here and he'd still be lucky if it didn't die in transport.

I think I catch more big catfish than most people because I target them, I'm well prepared ,and I fish in the right places at the right time. I can't think of any piece of equipment that would improve my chances. I fish in waters that are famous for big fish. I use the same bait that anygood catfisherman would use. I spend long nights on the water trying whatever I can to be the best fisherman I can. That being said, I'm well aware that every time I set the hook in a fish there was some chance involved that brought me to that point.

Wise *ss sayings are not, everyone owes something to chance... I bet deep down even Capt. Darrell knows how lucky he is and thanks God for his blessings every day.

I agree.

Luck and chance are two different things, and not to be confused.

All who hear Capt. Darryl speak will notice his intense love for catching catfish, and the lengths he will go to do it consistently.

Wanna-be guides can learn from Capt. Darryl and how he has marketed himself.

July 12th is the date, and you can get the address for the meeting location here: Welcome to the Carolina Catfish Club

We look forward to seeing everyone at the next Carolina Catfish Club meeting.

Just cause I feel like being a smart *ss today, I looked this up. Luck and chance are tied hand in hand. As a matter of fact luck can be defined as a favorable chance and chance can be defined as luck. The two words are nearly synonymous and almost always related.

Folks lilke Capt. Darryl and others that repeatedly catch trophy catfish don't rely on luck, chance, horseshoes, or four-leaf clovers to do it. Capt. Darryl will show in his presentation that much of what he does is calculated and well thought out.

One good day of fishing might be attributed to luck, chance, or just good fortune, but over the course of years they don't exist.

We all hope that the odds are in our favor while on the water, but no one goes fishing with a cane pole, four pound line, and Ivory soap, hoping to "get lucky" and win a catfish tournament!

Part of the key to being a successful catfish angler is making decisions that stack the odds in your favor. As Mac said, "you create your own luck" through preparation.

One of the main goals of the Carolina Catfish Club is to educate our members so that they can "create their own luck" and "stack the odds" in their favor while on the water.

If you are not able to attend the meeting and have any questions you would like passed along to Capt. Darryl, please be sure to post them here.

The only luck in catfishing is that you got lucky enough to go. .you have to put the time in to get on a pattern.
First off I'm not sure why 'luck' is such a bad word and secondly I'd love to meet the fisherman who isn't effected by it.

No matter how much time you put in there's always some luck involved... you can improve the odds but you can never take chance out of the equation.

A fisherman who doesn't need any luck would be a shoe in to win every tournament he entered, catch the biggest fish in the lake/river every time he hit the water, and have nothing left to learn about fishing. That person just doesn't exist.
