The area you are referring to is the small lake backed up by the Buckhorn dam on the Cape Fear River. There is a NC Wildlife boat landing at Avent Ferry that provides access to this part of the river. This landing is near Sanford on Avent Ferry Road. Do a Google Earth search or A map quest of Avent Ferry road and find where it crosses the Cape Fear. The boat landing is just up river from Avent Ferry Road.
The river in there is wide with very little current. The channel is 16 to 18 feet deep near the landing and is pretty much obstruction free up to junction of the Deep and Haw River. This is where the Cape Fear is born. After you pass the iron railroad bridge you will pass the power plant on the right and come to a fork. At the fork if you go to the right you go up the Haw River. Slow down at the fork and watch for various sticks and limbs in the river. The channel also shallows up some here but not enough to worry. Stay in the center of the channel. As you go up the Haw River watch for mats of drift wood and logs in the water. You will come to a highway bridge. This is the old NC Hwy 1 bridge.
Pay attention here!!! There are three channels under the bridge.

DO NOT GO THRU THE CENTER CHANNEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the water level is right you will not be able to see the huge chunk of concrete that lurks INCHES under the center channel. Several outboards and boats have been wrecked here.

STAY TO THE LEFT CHANNEL GOING UP. IT WILL BE TO THE RIGHT COMING BACK!!!!!!!!

I lost my prop here and almost ruined a brand new 25 HP Honda outboard. As you continue up the Haw you will come to the new NC Hwy 1 bridge. All clear under it. Good fishing for brim and blue gill around the brick brack rocks under the bridge. Some good flat head fishing between the two bridges. On up the Haw you come to the base of Jordan Lake Dam. Watch for rocks close up to the swift water.

If you go left at the fork just above the railroad bridge you will go up the Deep River. The channel is mostly clear on it up to just past the highway bridge.

Pretty good fishing all thru that section. Good channels on cut bait and The flats seem to respond to live blue gills, small carp and live minnows.

    Good luck
