do you need a 309 to just have a bluegill sitting? I have 2 309s and they get big bait 1LB and up, thats quite a big reel for just a bluegill. Maybe you should try a Penn 320GT2 or Ming CL70, I have 2 320GT2s and 4 Ming CL70s/2 CL60s, the mings can handle anything you can through at them. They are just a suggestion but far from junk, nothing in its price range can touch it except maybe an Okuma 450L or Shakespere Arsenal 20 HD. The Penn 309s new are $70, Penn 320GT2-$90, Ming CL70-$45, Ming CL60-$35, Abu 7000i for $100 Okuma 450Ls-$45, Shakespere Arsenal HD-$45. Good luck with your decision.

i just picked up a okuma avenger abs 65 rated for 25lb momo so i set up with 30lb power pro and it has a 22lb max drag. open face bait runner no birds nests like with bait casters .i payed 70 @ the bait shop for it wal mart has em you can order offline for 44 ish they have a bigger one a okuma avenger abs 95 that is even bigger and hold 30lb or 35 lb mono for 50-60 bucks ordered threw wal-m***. i also seen a abu garcia big game rocket bait cater there too for 80 bucks reel only. if you have not used a bait runner be for then you don't now what your missing . i always smile when my baitrunners start singing . so if you buy 50-80 buck reel + catfish or stripper class 8-10 foot ugly stick with some 30-50 lb mono. you should be ready to handle most cats depending on the size of the cats in your state, gl my friend .

should a C60 be big enough for like 10-50 lb catfish? *not thinking ill catc one quite that big, but i wanna be prepared :)
I've mentioned before that I' owned the C50 in the chat room just recently. With this reel I havent even been able to really give it a try. I've only landed two fish with it. Both were channel cats and weighed in at around 8 plus pounds. The reel preformed flawlessly!

I even hooked another small cat, and I was reeling in so hard I pulled the hook from the mouth and lost the fish. Now, don't get me wrong... I am a rookie with baitcaster and really did not understand how strong they were. Was my first hook up with the reel and I lost it... and I am using new hooks as well so I probably did not set the hook well enough.

As far as where to get them... I know you don't trust alot of other websites... hence our previous discussion... but "bhtackle.com" serisouly has so of the lowest prices on Ming Yang. Shipped to me in 3 days. I paid 21.99 for the C50's... the C60's are 23.99 and They have 70's and 80's as well. "bhtackle.com" is a trusted website from my shopping experience. I am so others here have used it as well.

I hope this helps!

I've never heard of the C model but the CL60/CZH60/CL60a all are comparable to the Abu 6500, they are slightly larger with more line capacity. The biggest I have landed with my CZH60 is 41LB BlueCat and my Abu 6500 a 53LB Bluecat, my buddy has landed a 60+ on his CL60 so I dont see any problems there. The only reason I suggested the CL70 is because you stated you wanted a large reel so i figured you'd want something a little bigger. The CL70 is slightly larger than the abu 7000 with more line capacity. After looking at bhtackle's website you might wanna call them or just order from stingray. bhtackle is definetly cheaper but is seems that they only have 3 choices as far as models and no options as far as clickers, handles or colors.

If your talking about " backing your reel," it most likely means that your using braid, and instead of filling the whole spool up with expensive braid, you "back" or start your spool with less expensive mono, then tie your braid to the mono and continue spooling. The mono is like a filler that will build up your spool. Not much is needed, and try to use the equivalent diameter mono if your using braid.

I own 2 cl60a's and use 65lb braid, and prob next spools will be 80lb.

Hope this helps

could anyone make a video on how to back it up? i think if i tie on mono to braid, it will just fly off? what kind of knot do you use?
you wont need a video, just put like 50 yds of 30-60LB mono on the spool, then tie it to the braid with a uni to uni knot. Then spool your braid. All my CL60 models have 65LB Power Pro. The CL70s have 80LB Power Pro. you could do fine with 65 though. Google the knot for a description

300 yards should be good, 150yds won't cut it..."THE BACKING" is used for a reel filler but the main reason is so the braid does not slip on the spool. Braid is a slick line and will slip around on your spool no matter how tight you spool it up.

I would go with the 300 yd spool with equivelent mono diameter backing so if you go with 65lb braid I would put at least 30yds of 17lb mono for backing just to hold it to the reel.

Alot of folks put the backing/mono on just so they do not have to buy so much braid,,,,bad move in my opinion due to the constant re tying and cutting the line you have spooled= to buying more braid more often!....go with as much braid as possible with the least amount of backing to keep your line from slipping on the spool.... better to be over prepared than under!

You might not be able to spool the whole 300 yds on that reel with the backing but you will be preety close.. And can use the extra to tie leaders for open water.
