Are there red bumps on the tails? Sounds like Flatworms.

This time of year they are probably channel cats that have been nesting. The channel cats will fight anything like crazy when nesting. Are their lips swollen also? The bumps on them are from fighting and some will even have patches of skin missing. You don't want to try to lip one of these when they are like that cause they will bite the fool out of you.
