My friend who's a gar fishing specialist caught this one Saturday night on the Brazos River in Texas. He estimates it would weigh close to 30 lbs. His report said he caught two gator gar, got them to near the bank and both broke off after he grabbed the leader. One he estimates at over 80 lbs, the other at 100. He knows his gar, his personal best is 180 lbs.

I know there have been quite a few hybrid longnose/gator gar being caught in the Brazos and Trinity Rivers...they just look like a mix of the two, but I don't doubt this is a pure longnose, I've seen them this big in the Vermilion!!:eek:oooh:

The guy who caught this one has caught one of the hybrids, if that is what they are. He contacted Parks and Wildlife and they say a hybrid doesn't exist. He emailed Capt Kirk, the gar guide the guides on the Trinity. Kirk agreed there are gar out there that look like hybrids and he, as well as clients, have caught them. P and W won't look at them. In denial, I guess.
