I've been thinking. If you have the same small logpile will it hold different numbers of fish if it's got a sandbar next to it vs a silty-mud shoreline?

The cutbanks I see are almost all black dirt, is there a type that's more attractive to fish?

If there's a bunch of mud bottom, will they just go sit on a sand patch for a while?

Imo, experience is the hardest thing to get. There's only one way to pay for it.

I also wondered if, where cut banks are the only real habitat, they prefer dirt or clay? I know I hear plenty of beaver whackin their tails so they must find dirt banks suitable for their dens.

The small log pile with the sandbar next to it would prolly hold the better fish. Reason being is because a sandbar holds alot of baitfish vs a mud/silt bottom run in the river. But don't pass up any log pile no matter what the bottom is made up of. Remember,,, flatheads are territorial and moreless take over some of the better spots/log jams. They run the smaller ones off. So,,, the better log jam with the sandbar next to it might only hold one big flathead. The other log jam with the silt/mud bottom might hold smaller flatheads.
Cutbanks with rootwads and underwater holes going up into the bank are what I look for.

Sand to hard gravel bottom perfered but will fish hard clay ect. I stay the heck away from silt here its full of lil blugs that burrow in and kill live baits in a hr or 2. If you can find boulders in conjunction wiht a log jambs on a outside bend with a nice sand-grvel shaol in front of it whammo fishing location De flats are there ys just gota put the time in to get em to find a bait. Also a few well placed limb lines can give you a clue if flats are usen a log jamb and the older the jamb and bigger the better I like to see grass growen on the ones I fish.

The first thing I learned when I got my first LCR was that as a general rule
those long flats held no fish. Fish like dropoffs, humps, and cuts. Above all
they like cover. Log jams, rock piles, stumps, and such. Baitfish need cover
to hide in to survive. And the big fish follow the bait fish.
