Looking at the fish will be correct a lot of times but the fact is...you cant always tell. I've seen old catmen that weren't sure either and the only TRUE way is to count the anal fin rays. You can look at tails, fins, squared off stuff, rounded stuff, and everything else under the sun but the fact remains......rays are the ONLY true way to tell.

Some smaller blues will look like channels ( they have spots) and some bigger channels will look a lot like blues ( darker bluish tint an or no spots). Age, time of year, water ,etc all play factors on what a fish may look like at a particular time of year. Some blues and channels you can spot easy and sometimes you cant tell no matter what.

    Count em

under 24 rays is a white cat
    24-29 is a channel
    30/over is a Blue
Flathead is the only one that you can always spot out easy.

There are a lot of big channels being caught when in fact they are regular blues but folks don't always know how to tell ; )

Like Jim said the only way to tell for sure is to count the rays on the fin. But my guess I would say it is a blue. I have seen many fish brought in at tournaments that looked like huge channels but after counting the rays prooved to be blues.

Here's a link to the Virginia Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries web stie that helps identify the difference. About half way down is the catfish section. Just click on Blues or Channels.
