Went fishing on the MN river last night. With Shamu and KJR fellow BOC brothers. We got on the water shortly after 6:00pm. Fishing with 4-10 inch suckers. Action was slow so we decided to break out the propane stove and fry up venicon with onions. (It was awesome, Shamu is quite the cook).
About the time its was starting to get dark we noticed some unusual action on my rod. We were anchored 3ft from shore in our favorite spot, the current was moving us back and forth, we were moving in a way when my line should have been going slack, instead my rod tip would move the faintest. Not enough to trigger the bells. but enough to get our attention. Then we would drift back a little and my line should have been getting taught, instead it would go slack. So after about 3-5 min of this I decide to check bait. I start doing a real slow real and feel a little tension. So I keep gradually pulling in and I feel a tug. I go for a hook set.... I feel a slight pull and then slack. I'm thinking must be river crap caught up in the line. I continue to reel in and realize that my line that I had thrown strait away downstream from the boat is way near the back out towards the middle of the river. Questioning my fellow shipmates if they had recently reeled in any of their lines, thinking that some how lines had crossed and mine had gotten pulled towards the back of the boat. (I'm up in the Bow.) Both Shamu and KJR said they hadnt touched thier lines any time recently. So I start reeling in faster....... When I realize that there is a fish on my line. I set the hook and start fighting what feels like a smaller cat. We're all happy thinking "cool" the bite is starting. I continue to reel, pulling in the fish when all of a sudden it starts taking off on a run. Bigger than anything I;ve hooked to date. This fish leads me all around the boat, under the moters around the anchor line. for 15 to 20 Minutes the battle continued. (I'm using my trusty old river rig. A cardinal 723 spinning reel with a short rod). Anyways finally the beast comes to the surface and "Shamu the Super Scoop" netted my biggest Flathead to date 40 inches @ 27lbs (wieghed on 2 separate scales).
Whooo Hooo.
This one was released to fight another Day!
My thanks to my fellow BOC brothers Shamu and KJR, with out them I think this would have been another fish story about the one that got away.
feel free to check out the pics
