Went on my first flathead trip from this past Friday night to about noon today, caught nothing, BUT that's not the point:wink:

I had about 25 4"-6" tilapia for bait, I must have killed at least 15 of them

I was wondering, what's the best way to hook tilapia, bluegill or goldfish?

Dedends on how I'm fishing, If i'm bottom fishing hook in the rear 1/4 of the bait so it will swim up, but doing this the bait will die quickily from exhaustion. If I am fishing current hook them thru the nose so the bait will be lead along and not fight the hook, it will look more natural.

When fishing live bait I will run the hook up through the mouth and out a little above the nostrils .

In current, up through the lips, or sideways through the eyes..

In slacker water,, under a bobber, above the spine behind the dorsal.
In carolina, or 3-way rig, behind anal vent below spine..

Just enough meat to hold the hook. Don't want to hit the brain, or spine with the hook!!

However, fresh killed is pretty good bait, especially this time of year.... but, most like to cut it some.. Use Heads with gut pocket, or descale a filet and hook that up..

    Glad you got out!!

I felt bad for those fish, they'd be all wiggly one second, then I'd stick the hook through and they'd go stiff with all fins stretched out

You can say that I had a hard time missing the spine and brain or the hook might have been too big for the tiny fish, I was using 10/0 kahle, 9/0 octo j and 8/0 circle

I hook gills thru the back in the meaty part....I've had them on the hook all nite and not die...and I can't waste a gills so I thru him back in the bait tank and used him a few days later....

If they are dieing right away you a hooking them wrong...you'll figue it out

I'll keep all this in mind for next year, I wish I could say that I'll practice, but then that's just cruel

Spine runs through the middle of the body, right? lol

i like to hook my live baits threw there nose holes and an extra hook in the tail it just gives the fish a better action and a better apeal to a fishes eye

here in south africa we use that metherd to cath 60-80 lb catfish
the favorite is a 3 inch tilapia preferebly a bright colord one

Welcome aboard Jovi to the Brotherhood of Catfishermen! You are sure to find everything needed to know about catfishing right here. The folks are great and it's just nice to be a part of the family. I can see yall hook the baits somewhat differently than here in the US at least for some but yes tilapia is a famous bait in some parts. Good luck.
