I Think It Is More Of A Personal Preference.

How Big A Bluegill Are You Using?

Are You Casting 100 yards Or More?

Also What Hooks Are You Using?

I Upper Lip (Between The Nostils) Hook Bigger Ones Like 6 inches Or Bigger.

And Behind The Dorsal Fin For Smaller Ones.

And I Upper Lip Hook For Farther Cast.

Hope This Helps And I Am Sure Some More Member Will Chime In Soon:big_smile:

I agree with Shelby. Each technique has its advantages, but mostly either one works.

if you are fishing on bottom, hook the bluegill underneath, under where you would hook them behind the dorsal fin from above.that way, when it is in the water, the weight of the hook won't cause the bluegill to fall over.

I have always hooked mine just behind the dorsal fin. Works fine for me.

Have never really considered this fact, but it makes sense and that is good enough for me to try it. I prefer the lip, but I will give it a shot.

Little known fact is that Flathead Catfish typically eat their live bait head first, that is why I hook them in the lip. I want that hook in the flatheads mouth!

I have hooked behind dorsal fin on the smaller baits but like to use the lip on the larger baits tho. Also as was said it seems cats pretty much go for the head first

hook them from the bottom.have the hook underneath them.
hook them beneath the backbone, under where you would hook them from the top behind the dorsal.

I keep hearing "behind the dorsal fin". I hook mine right under the dorsal fin, about right in the middle. Wherever you decide to hook him, be sure not to get too deep in the body and puncture any vitals. People in the know say tail clipping works best, but I'm too lazy to clip every tail of every bait I throw out. :smile2:
