what part of the year is the best time to catch flatheads.
check out the dusk or dawn thread in this dicussion...
I personally like it when the water temperture reaches 55 degrees.
I fish from April until November, but I live in Virginia, so it vary's from state to state. 55 degress the Flatheads start moving. Good Luck
I personally believe very early spring or even colder weather will produce really big ones if you find their habitat, I have caught them year round but it's no fun when they are spawning for sure. they just dont seem to be on the bite then.
during the summer when they spawn it just seems like they get lockjaw lol.
mid april-june then aug-oct seems ta be the prime time
I do well with bigger fish in August.
Numbers will have to be May.
I believe the best time of the year is in the Fall. My biggest Flathead came in late September. But, you can catch a monster anytime really.
My biggest fish have always come in the spring - April and May - but I sometimes get into numbers of fish in the fall - November - when they are starting to move into winter holes.
I think the Spring is the best.
I'm dying for spring just to get out and get some fishing action.
Agree with Most - The Spring. April thru early June.
Also Late Aug thru Oct.
I think May is one of the best months.
I like May too, right before the spawn
I agree with lendog, the best times arelate march thru mid may and sept thru nov.
it seems here in tx that mid march until late august is the best time. we fish around Sealy in the Brazos.
Spring and fall for me in Indiana but in Arizona it was spring and summer. I would say spring and fall would be best for alot of the country. I do extremely well when the water temp is between 70-75 degrees for the big ones.
when its warm out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:smile2:
I mainly fish a power plant lake for them so there really isn't a terrible time to go but our best numbers (and some good size too) has been in June and July and the biggest flatheads I've ever caught in any body of water the lake included has been in the fall of the year mainly in October. Not that I catch a bunch of bigguns but my 4 biggest have come in October lake and river.
There is a lot of variables in this question. When Water temps hit 55 to 60 degrees is a good time to start in spring. Then you can fish for them till it drops to about 45 to 50 degrees in the fall.
With you living in Tenn. you can probably start seeing some flathead action a month before say I will in Ky. and 2 months before the guys in Ohio and Pa. It's related to water temps more than anything else I think.
Warm spring rain can have a great affect on the water temps as well. The earlier you get warm spring rains the earlier the water temps will warm to the magical tempreture.
