It seems the best bait is no bait. It was today anyway.
Had this fish on my trotline today.

Last saturday I had to leave the river early so I unbaited my line and left it.
I got back to it this morning to bait it back up and this guy jerked the line
out of my hand. Talk about surprised! (narrowly avoided a tragedy)
Anyway id have bet my leg he would have went 50 but my $5 walmart scales said 42.

Who needs bait when you have sharp hooks. Thanks for sharing.

wow Ray thats pretty crazy! Any chance you missed a hook when you were unbaiting them? Or any possibility someone ran your line for you? LOL

That's pretty awesome man. Congrats on the catch. I just caught a little bullhead earlier without a hook! :eek:oooh:

I tied a piece of shrimp on and when he hit it I yanked him out of the water.:smile2:

Eather is possible. I wonder if that bare hook didnt catch a channel like bigobear suggested, then the channel caught the flathead. Maybe?

Quite possible. Noticed an increase in folks finding channels in the bellies of the big ones lately. Last weekend my neighbor camper said he hung a channel on a rod and had a big flathead hit while reeling in the channel. Got him to the boat before the flathead turned the channel cat loose and swam off.

I have heard of this happening. A big ol flathead would have no problem swallowin a channel cat.
I did not take this picture and have no idea who did. I found it somewhere a long time ago.

Nothing in the rule book about having to have a baited hook. I guess a catch is a catch either way.:smile2: Nice fish

Got an uncle that fishes his pond with a unbaited trotline and regularly catches channels .

Good catch! Maybe a bluegill hit the hook, channel cat ate the bluegill, flathead ate the channel. I would call it a freebie!:smile2:
