What is the best bait EVER to use to get the cats???

  2. Welcome to the B.O.C.
I would suggest the baits that are Indeginous to the area of waters your fishing, such as Gizard Shad, Blue Gill etc. I would always bring a second bait such as stink bait or worms, grasshoppers or another bait that you can go to besides the main {indeginous} baits.
    Hope this helps.

Big nasty gizzard shad. Then gills. Then I go for the stinky crap.

So far I have found both SkipJack and Bluegills to be the best, however still can't rule chicken liver or a good old fashioned night crawler. Cats seem to be pretty indiscriminate and are open to try just about anything that is placed in front of them. I have caught cats on everything from hot dogs to swim baits.

Best bait would have to be a cut bait or any live bait. what the fish would live on if they didnt have us fisherman catching them.IMO that would be the best information given what they normally would eat

Everyone has their own favorites that are the "best". For me -flatheads, I guess a 6-8 inch bream. For channels, worms work good. I have caught my biggest channels(over 20 pounds) though on small live bream and goldfish fishing for flatheads...

Sounds to me like bream is most popular but I will cast a vote for the trusy ole Gizzard Shad.

Bluegill, shad, and a variety of other baits all work fine, but I agree with flatheadcat4u. Live Green Sunfish are a very productive bait for me. IMO they are the most under-utilized baitfish that most fisherman have to choose from. Here in the midwest they are very common, easy to catch, stay alive easily, and for me, are consistently a better fish catcher than even the live bluegill I use. When used as cut bait, I've not seen any difference in my catch rates. Channels, blue, and flats all seem to like them.
