my genal rule of thumb if its free its a good bait

what are you chasing if flaties carp bluegill all of theese are free
if channels and you want to catch the on free bait worms shad and sand toads work great

All the excessive rain has left a lot of ditches and low-lying areas full of water...so there's a ton of frogs and toads out there this year. A fat toad or leopard frog can be a pretty decent live bait, and right now they're everywhere. Good luck

For flatties you cant beat green sunfish, bluegill, carp or bullhead. Catch them yourself to save $$. Get alot and change baits once the fish loses strength. There is a difference between live land lively. For big channels sand toads, leopard frogs and live bait are my favorites. Although, I have caught some nice flats on the frogs.

Alot of old timers used Ivory for trotline bait. It stayed on the hook real well and let out a scent for a long time. Any 100% pure, natural soap will work.
