Best bait to use for Ohio River gar

    we was down at the old ohio today and we was watching gar and sripers chaseing shad and i was wondering if we should of used shad or what because they wouldnt bite anything today at the dam

    Thats wierd. When we make the mistake of wanting to fish on the low side of Meldahl down here, the gar will bite on anything. Shad, gill, your bare line and beads, the anchor rope or whatever. It's usually easier finding what they won't bite on.

    I was fishing the new cumberland lock and dam two days ago with a rapala suspended minnow, trying to catch stripers and wham a gar nailed it. At least i think he did, cause when i got him to shore, he didn't even have a hook in him, just wrapped my line around his snout about 15 times. got him in though.

    i just though it was really weird becuase much of the time anything we throw at them they will eat it but we only could get two catfish and a striper in the boat he just sat there and looked at it and swam off
