I would pick the Skipjack Herring. Its a native fish to our area, oily, and the blues and channels love it.

I like fresh caught Gizzard Shad except when the herring and Hickory Shad are in the river Spawning. The I like Herring first, Hickory Shad second, and Gizzard a close third. I like the Herring as Big Spawning Stripers love them as much as the Big Blue Cats:smile2:

When they were running, for the few days they were. I've been skunked for the last 3 weeks fishing with cut sunfish and bullhead I caught in a local pond. Actually that has been the best fishing the last 3 weeks. Maybe I should give the James up and go for the small stuff......its just as fun....
I NEED A BOAT to get the big ones. Bank fishing is a "SKUNKER" it stinks!

Definitely the biggest gizzards for blues, live and a big chunk about 4 inches wide. For the flatheads, bream about he size of my hand, as well as live gizzard shad.

My choice of bait depends on time of year.

sprng and early summer shad or goldeye

mid to late summer Asain Carp or Skipjack

    fall skipjack and shad

    skipjack, shad, bluegill.

Skipjack simply because there is nothing better.

Shad, almost as good but much more available.

Bluegill, Best flathead bait, stays alive forever

I like Bluegill and cut carp the cats here seem to eat it up any time of year.

Gizzard shad and during the summer - eel.

I have yet to try live bait, I need to rig up something to keep them alive. But I hear live works good here in the summer.

The season does make a difference, but gizzard shad always works for me. Live or big chunks! I need to get my gill net licence, cause throwing the cast net is starting to take a toll on my shoulders! I would like to give a shout out to the catfish main man, Mr. Hugh Self! He put me on my biggest catfish to date. 58 lbs! My previous best was 56 lbs! Tight lines everybody!

That's a nice flathead you are holding Taylor. Where did you catch it and what part of the state are you from?
