Hi Mark, and welcome to the BOC from the beach in LA... I'm some 25 miles west of Buena Park ... not much fresh water fishing here.. mostly salt water... You have got a "Pay Lake" Irvine that is close by and they have some channel cats and some Blues that come out more in Sept to Oct ... Nov.... I general get to the Colorado River for two or three trips... or up north to Mendota... Enjoy your stay..

Well this is the way I see it - & I could be wrong on this (I been know to be in the past - lol) but just seeing some of the post here on Catfishing here in California, This is the way that I look at it:
Of the top Three Catfish that are fished for here in California, being the Channel Cat, The Blue Cat & the Flathead Catfish:

    In Northern & Central California:
I would have to say it's the Channel Cat.

In The South Western part of California:
I would have to say it's the Blue Cat.
    &
In the South Eastern part of California:
It would have to be the mighty Flathead Cat.

At lease that's the way that I see it.

cheers guys . i wasnt sure of how things may have changed in the U.S.A .i seem to remember it wasnt easy finding cats around L.A area , [except the bullheads ,and great b.b.q ,s ] ,but as stated the sea fishing was good ,esspecially of huntinton beach pier, in them days we caught halibut , small stingrays ,and a never ending supply of yellow fin croakers . was great fun .to find cats we traveled north, towards lake tahoe in nevada ,stopping off at various location on route , thanks again guys .atb
