    Hey Guys,
I am very new to fishing the river this will be my first season and was looking for some advice on bait for the river. I would like to know what you are using for channels and flathead as well as how you go about catching live bait on the river as well as what makes a good spot to catch bait. I am very adapt to catching night crawlers so that is my fall back.

Thanks for your reply in advance!

Try in the creek mouths for bait. Use fresh cut shad if you can get it, for channels and blues. For Flatheads try some live green sunfish, or bluegill. Are you bank fishing or do you have a boat?

Yeah, what Keith said. I get my flathead bait from local ponds.

Travis welcome to the BOC! I'm still learning the river too, but last year I pretty much stuck to cut bluegill for bait. I tried a few others but the bluegill always got the bites. If your any good at throwing a net I did see shad numerous times at the roseport ramp. I work in st. joe so if you want to hook up sometime and fish I'd be glad to go with you. I dont know of too many good bank spots in that area though, but we can have fun trying. Hurry up and get 10 post and I'll PM you my #.

The ol standby cut carp and buff is is good. Shad are great when ya can get em when the water drops try the dead water behind trail dikes with a net. Small green sunfish and gills are good to. But what I tear em up on somtimes is big chubs, creek minners, small suckers, and live 6 in to 10 inch carp and buff fish. You can fish with small bigheads 6 to 10 inchs, just make shure when ya net em to kill em and toss em on ice. You cant fish with em live. Slash em 2 or 3 times head hook and toss out. Wham blues luv em. Last tip crawlers and river worms use a 1/0 to 2/0 treble and hook on 4 to 8 big worms lil ones will nip it but the big ones will slam it. Worms will catch everything in the river.:smile2:

Travis i am around the st. joe area and catch most of my bait from the river so i could help you out. If you post i will reply or just look for a 24ft sea ark with a big motor on it hooked to a blueish green ford truck i usally put in at the casino to catch bait.

Thanks for all the great information I will take you up on the offers to go out, it certainly would be great to learn from some experienced cat fisherman. Thanks again for the advice, I am assuming that I should invest in a casting net for river bait. I am fishing from a boat so I am really looking forward to this year, it is "new" to me and ready to take out.

Cut shad and skipjack if you can find it. If you buy vac packed bait always puncture the bag when thawing, if you don't it will soften the bait and squeeze all the blood out. And the live bluegill is a good idea, the little green sunfish you catch in creeks work great too.

Haven't had any sustained luck so far this month, but the majority of my bites have come on cut shad, shad guts, and crawdads. Good luck to you and hope to see you out there
