In a thread from the channel cat forum Matt77 suggested I start this thread here. I need to move to a larger bait, and due to government restrictions I don't have a lot of choice. I tried a white pet shop mouse earlier tonight, but I only had a half hour to fish. I didn't hook anything. Has anyone else used mice and what were the results?

They work great for cat's and bass, Just float them out there on a piece of styrofoam<sp and try to get them right over the spot you want to fish at then pull them off the foam and Fish On lol Forgot to add this , Use a thick peice of foam poke a hole threw the top to bottom and tie some old line to that and try and drift the mouse were you want him pull the foam back to you for later use.

I have never seen nor heard of most of these fish. But I know creek chub are mentioned frequently on this forum and I have never seen one, that I know of. But the important thing I learned tonight is that the list is for "live" baitfish. I guess I could use almost any dead fish as bait.

Pfft. Count yourself lucky. Where I live, we can't use any fish for live bait. They have to be dead before you put a hook in them.

I recognize some of the names on the list as common bait minnows I've seen mentioned in books. Set out a minnow trap and you should be able to get something that's legal. Shiners and suckers can get to be pretty good sized, as I recall.

I don't know but it reminds me of a funny story a guy told a while back.

Years back his dad had gathered up a bunch of frogs for bait and they set out a bunch of juglines. A couple of hours later when they ran the jugs they found every one of the damn frogs setting on top of the jugs unharmed, LOL!!

Had the mouse on my line for about three hours. No bites. At about half way through I checked to see if the bait was still there, it was and I doused it in some stinking fish oil scent. That didn't help. The next morning I threw away the other two dead mice I got from the pet store. Don't think I'll try them again. Oh by the way my buddy beside me caught 5 channel cats none bigger than 5 pounds.
I guess I'll eventually make a minnow trap and hopefully catch some big ones that are legal to use. And I didn't see anything that said I couldn't use a dead blue gill. At least I have some options.

all ya need is a small creek a light pole and some lil 10 to 12 aberdeen hooks and lil chunks of worms. I get gills and creek chubs here in Mo with em. Also a size 1/4 inch mesh 5 ft cast net is awsome for netten a school of big minners for bait. We got a minner we call stone rollers here that school up in large shoals one cast I got 3 to 6 dozen 6 to 8 inch minners dat cats just love.

Never tried mice for cats, no pun intended, but they are dynamite on the big Brown trout when they are spawning in the fall.:secret: Just hook them in the scruff of the neck with a 1/0 short shank hook and toss them in the water. No need to cast them as they will swim away from you/shore in 4 wheel drive. Drives the Browns nuts with viscious muskie like strikes. Really messes with the flyfishermen's brain too! While they are concerned with tippet size and matching the hatch, we show up with med/heavy cat tackle, leather gloves, and a mailbox. They give us strange looks till the action explodes! FYI We use glue traps along fencerows and check them frequently. Remove mice with gloved hand and put them in a mailbox, on end cause they jump. Put all-grain and 1/2 an apple in with them till you get enough to head out after the big browns. Apple is used instead of water cause they will spill water and get wet & die of hypothermia pretty quick at thanksgiving time of year, brrr. We have kept them for 2 weeks with no problem. Bait up with leather gloves to avoid getting bit, and teach the elitist longliners how to really catch Big Brown trout! We laughed our butts off till the mice were gone, and landed 10 fish with 14 mice in a little over an hour. The fish were weighed by a stunned warden that was checking up on all the excitement. They weighed 8.5 - 24#. Kept 3 fish that swallowed it, 9,11, and 13 lbs. Best thing was the 6 catch and release pins we got in the mail 6 weeks later with that wardens help.:Happy:That was 15 yrs. ago below Norfork dam with my two boys. A fond "Catching" memory of ours. But for catfish, I would stick with skipjack and leave the gloves at the house.
