The fish were biting and the prize money was plentiful at the Madison Catfish Classic, held Saturday and Sunday. By the time the last fish was weighed, a two-day total of 3,665.5 pounds of fish had been caught and a record $19,000 purse was split by anglers in the 74-boat competition.
According to tournament director Jeremy Leach, fishermen came from as far as North Carolina, Georgia and Missouri.
The Louisville team of Rob Benningfield and Bart Matherly caught a total of 181.2 pounds to win the 2010 Classic. The pair hauled in 111.6 pounds on Saturday and 69.6 on Sunday with their biggest fish tipping the scales at 34.6 pounds. For their efforts, they took home a check for $5,000.
"We did most of our fishing around Vevay," Benningfield said. "The water conditions were good, there was good current and the fish were coming off spawn. Some of the fish were beat up and some were clean."
The team caught 11 weighable fish, using skip jack and moon-eye for bait.
Sunday afternoon's storm played havoc with most teams, forcing many of the competitors off the water. But the summer storm served to help out the winners.
"We actually caught our big fish after the storm," Benningfield said.
Both fishermen agreed the event was well-run and both were equally impressed.
Finishing second was the team of Scott and Brady Webb of Norris City, Ill., with a two-day total of 177.0 pounds - 63.6 on Saturday and a whopping 113.4 pounds Sunday. Their big fish weighed in at 37.2 pounds. Their prize money was $3,000.
Taking home the prize for big fish in the tournament was the Falmouth, Ky. team of Eddie Wilson and J.W. Smith, who were fishing for the first time in the area. The two reeled in their 51.8-pound cat Saturday around 1:30 p.m. upriver from the Madison launch area on the Indiana side. They won $740 for big fish and $160 for placing 14th overall with 83.4 pounds.
Smith and Wilson used mainly skip jack for bait. As for the tournament overall, "We loved it," they said. "The water wasn't as deep as we usually fish in, though."
Madison's Marlin Langes and Cincinnati's Chris DeBow were third with a total of 173.6 pounds and earned $2,000. Madison's Danny Gross and Scott Cyrus, the defending tournament champions, were fourth with 167 total pounds and earned $1,200. Louisville's Don Elder and Chris Tramm were fifth with 158.4 pounds and took home $1,100.
