My buddy has been searching for a 1982 40 hp Merc. with 78 teeth and glued magnets. S.N. 6140740. He has called all over the US and they all say good luck.

first off Nice buck. I would suggest doing a search for boat salvage places. there are tons of them, and maybe you'll get lucky..

I have looked online and he has called a bunch of scrap yards. I found the same motor on ebay but it needed a flywheel too! I'm thinking it a very rare part due to the tooth count and glued vs riveted magnets. It has the thunderbolt ignition and 2 magnets.

One of the magnets shredded at one end. Can you use a different flywheel with more teeth and change the starter teeth? How about finding magnets off a similar flywheel and drilling out the rivets and riveting them to his flywheel. Can you order just magnets somewhere?

I see the listings on Ebay chage regularly. Keep watching it. I see alot of mercury flywheels, some with no info on what they fit so you might inquire and find one...
