I got a 16 foot, some indian named boat, with a 1973 Johnson 50 on the back. Heres the deal. The guy let the a$$ end sink at his dock. The motor was under water maybe a half a day. He pulled the plugs and tried to get it to crank but it was locked up. He gave it to me for $150.00 for boat motor and trailer. Cant beat that. I got to the house, pulled the plugs, sprayed the cylinders with PB blaster and worked the flywheel back and forth and it turned over within a few. The starter silinoid is bad and I think the carbs are stopped up. It'll crank on starting fluid, but thats as far as I've gotten. Anyone want to help a brother out. Its my first boat and I'd love to get at least one good run before I take it to the lake and sink it.

cant really to afford to take it to a shop. Thats why I'm looking for the backyard mechanic. Might just need to pour some of your stovetop water in it:biggrin:

Try running some b 12 chem tool and try not to run it out of the water.B 12 is sold at wall mart, carb kits are not hard to do. Johnson is a good motor, I would hate to waste good stove water on a motor, but I know it will run a 454, haha lol!

Hey Matt, if going through the carb stuff doesn't work, try pulling the flywheel and check the stator for rust...Coil packs may be going bad if they're old... Look at the diagrams on
iShopmarine.com before you start...

I don't know were you at but my dad does good work and cheap just ask preston (flatheadslayer) he'll vouch for him
Hey he can work on it if he wants. I'm east of Atlanta, but will drive up your way and drop it off. It does me no good in the yard anyway. I just dont have two much money to get it fixed. Let me know if he wants to look at it. Its a fuel problem, cause like I said before it'll crank and run on starter fluid if you give it a spray every now and again. I can take the fuel line from the crankcase off afterwards and its dry.
