you can do that. i have done it when fishing out here in AZ. if you are using cut bait you can use a light no snag sinker and cast up current and then just watch your line and let it drift back past you. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. no harm in trying it. alot of times i will cast into the current and let it pull the bait back out of the current and that where most of my strikes will come, just outside of the current.
